Ghanaian peacekeepers serving with the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG) have been decorated with service medals as Ghana marked its 69th Independence Anniversary.
The ceremony in Banjul brought together senior military officers, diplomats, and government officials, who praised the contingent’s professionalism and dedication.
Deputy Force Commander Colonel Hassan Konei said the anniversary theme, “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope,” underscored the link between security and development. “Prosperity cannot be sustained without security, and hope cannot endure in an environment of uncertainty,” he told the gathering.
Colonel Konei noted that ECOMIG had been vital in maintaining constitutional order and supporting security sector reform in The Gambia. He commended the Ghanaian troops for their mobility, endurance, and operational effectiveness despite being a relatively small force.
A senior Ghana Armed Forces officer described the medals as recognition of the country’s long tradition of peacekeeping in West Africa, including missions in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Côte d’Ivoire.
A Gambian government representative expressed gratitude to ECOWAS for its role in stabilising the country after the 2016 presidential election, highlighting Ghana’s contribution.
ECOMIG official Miatta Lily French praised the contingent for combining security duties with humanitarian outreach, including education and health initiatives, and for maintaining security at the Barra Ferry Terminal.
Officials said the ceremony symbolised African solidarity and the importance of regional cooperation in safeguarding democracy and stability.
